What is an emo, really? Are they people who are depressed and wear black? Or is there more to it?

They cut themselves cuz they’re depressed. If they don’t cut their wrists/etc they aren’t really emo, just goth. They shouldn’t die, a couple of my friends are emo but i still love them. They just get really sad sometimes. Next time your friends say they want to go punch an emo person in the face, tell them that they’re just people who are sad, most likely because their parents are divorced or something like that. My (emo) friend said that when she was 2 or 3 her dad left her and her pregnant mom out on the middle of the street in a small town. He’s had a wife or two since then, I’m not sure how many. But they have a hard life and if it gets worse they could end up killing themselves, so don’t be mean to them.
Emo are weird people…. they cut themselves cuz they are upset or something.
emos r jus like punks…wear skinny legged jeans, tight tees, wear alotta black, sometimes get depressed cuz they hate their life, n like to look good….we like to hit people, and to make our hair look beautiful…we have negative attitudes…we stand up for wut we believe in n we dont let ANYBODY TELL US WUT TO DO! we dnt always cut our wrists…thts jus for the totally InSaNe

I wear black, red, grey,…..etc., my hair covers like half of my face (including one eye). some may call me depressed, but really, i’ve just had a rough life. my parents are divorced(i don’t really know my father), and my moms boyfriend moved in and….well…..life’s hard. i wear a lot of black eyeliner. a lot of “emos” cut themselves to feel the scream inside.
there is more to being emo than just wearing black and being depressed. its a state of mind. it’s angst. it’s pain. but it’s bliss to have a reason to scream. we are not preppy little plastics who cry over little things just so we can cry. we have real pain.
Generally EMO’s are rich little whiny kids that decide the world is against them because their rich parents didn’t but them the £3000 laptop they wanted for Christmas and got them a car instead, they usually come from rich families but think they are misunderstood because Ville Valo wrote a song they like that was sad. They usually have massive CD collections with so called artists like HIM & Fall Out Boy and like to sit in dark corners rocking back and forth crying about not being old enough to drink yet or over that girl they like telling them they look like a freak, or as usually crying because their parents suggested they get a Job
. They have the tendency to cut themselves (usually in places that are on show like war wounds) but they never actually Slit their wrists properly or cause any real damage because they are doing it purely for the attention

Emo is a music genre. It means emotional hardcore.
Somehow it got turned into this stupid false stereotype of kids who dress in black, cut themselves, are depressed and so forth.
However, that is not what “emo” is.
“Scene” is the correct term for the fashion style that is often mistaken for emo.
People who self harm have a serious problem and need help. (No offense intended to anyone.) They are not emo because you cannot be a music genre.

As for your other question: “how I can make them look good in front of my friends,” The best you can do is explain to them the real definition of emo and hope they understand.
The truth is, most of the people they hate are probably more so “posers” than people actually dressing truly scene, people who try to be that stereotype rather than be themselves and perhaps dress scene, a fashion I rather like but do not dress so myself very much.
Or perhaps they are in need of a friend to help them out if they self harm. Either way, your friends have no right to hate them and personally, my “friends”, would not hate other people, reguardless of the reason, no offense intended to you or your friends.
Unfortunately, alot of people are like your friends and you in the sense that they do not know the real meaning of “emo.”
It really irks me that this stereotype has fooled so many people and I just hope we can get the real meaning out, about all stereotypes.

a lot of people say ” AWW! EMOS THEY CUT THERE WRIST” not nesscarly. an emo is someone who is sad, depressed if you like. the tend to wear a lot of black clothing similar to the “goth”. many will wear skinny tight jeans (black) and sand shoes or black plimsouls. to many people now think that if your an emo u slit ur wrist however that is not the case u can be emo and not slit ur wrist. this “emo” style has evolved from other styles. first it was punk then goth and now emo. emo is dipicted by to many people that they slit there wrist wear all black and try to commit sucide. that is so wrong!! obviously other people will have different opinions on what a emo is thats my opinion. for example a wee ned or a chav might say “AW! MAN EMOS THEY PURE SLIT THERE WRISTS N’ THAT!” to me that is wrong.

Picnic gets cancelled, most would say aww… emos would say either (depends) WHAAAAAAAA, and start crying or something along the lines of very sad, or DAMNIT!
